🇺🇸 Claude Opus 5.5 Review: AI Decompiles PS2 Games for Browser
Claude Opus 5.5 just triggered a small earthquake in retro gaming: over the past two weeks, PS2/PS3-era titles like Halo: Combat Evolved, Call of Duty: Black Ops, GTA: Vice City, Skate 3, and The Simpsons: Hit & Run started showing up as playable browser tabs — no emulator install required. The people behind it aren't game studios. They're solo developers using AI to decompile decades-old game engines.
A Browser Game Console, Built in Two Weeks
The flagship project is TabStationToo, a PS2 emulator built on the open-source PCSX2 project that runs entirely in the browser (Chrome works best). The developers set the goals and ran the tests; Claude Opus 5.5 wrote most of the code — rewriting the PS2's JIT compiler to target WebAssembly, porting the graphics renderer to WebGPU, and generating automated tests that diff its output against the original PCSX2 to catch regressions. Titles like GTA: San Andreas, Final Fantasy XII, and Resident Evil 4 are on the test list, running near full speed on machines like an M1 Max MacBook or a Ryzen 7 laptop.
Honest Take: This Isn't Quite "Decompilation"
Terminology matters here. True decompilation turns a binary back into readable, recompilable source. What's actually happening looks closer to reimplementation — the AI studies observed behavior and rewrites logic to match it, rather than recovering the original source line by line. Results can look "borderline flawless" (one Halo port even has working online multiplayer with normal ping), but that's not the same as truly understanding the original codebase. Compatibility swings wildly by hardware, and there's no independent compatibility list yet — only developer self-reports.
Copyright Didn't Get Easier Because AI Did the Work
Players are technically supposed to supply their own legally-owned BIOS and game discs, but enforcement of that line is murky in practice. The bigger worry for publishers: this could turn into IP whack-a-mole. Send a cease-and-desist on one port, and a developer can spin up a near-identical replacement with Claude Opus 5.5 overnight, at close to zero cost. That's a genuinely new enforcement problem for rights holders.
What This Means If You Use AI Agents
The more useful takeaway isn't the novelty — it's the workflow shift: leaving Claude Opus 5.5 running overnight on tedious, long-horizon low-level engineering work — byte-level output diffing, writing its own regression tests — is becoming a normal dev pattern, not a party trick. If your job has similarly repetitive, patience-heavy grunt work, this is worth testing yourself. Just don't expect it to replace human judgment on compatibility or legal risk.
You won't know until you try it.
