🇺🇸 REA Review: Reverse-Engineering MCP Tool Tops GitHub

REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) is this week's #1 trending repo on GitHub — an open-source reverse-engineering MCP tool that wires Ghidra, IDA Pro, and Hopper into AI coding agents like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex, letting them inspect apps and binaries directly. It crossed 10,000+ stars in under a week.

What REA Actually Is: An MCP Toolbox, Not New Tech

REA doesn't invent new reverse-engineering techniques — it wraps established tools (Ghidra, IDA Pro, Hopper) behind a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server so an AI agent can call them directly. One command, npx rea-agents setup, registers it with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Devin, and more.

Core Features

  • 68 MCP tools covering decompilation, function analysis, and evidence logging
  • A "Decompile, Understand, Recreate" workflow with traceable evidence at each step
  • Support for native binaries, Electron apps, .NET assemblies, and plain websites
  • v4.1 (shipped Oct 6) added Android APK analysis via JADX and firmware analysis via Binwalk/Unblob
  • Everything runs locally — no uploading target apps to an external server

Why It Topped GitHub Trending in a Week

REA started life in April 2026 as a small project called betterBinaryMCP, then got expanded into a full platform in early October — and that's when it exploded. It's a signal of how much demand exists for agents that can actually take apart software, not just read docs about it. The MIT license made it easy for both companies and hobbyists to adopt without friction.

Honest Take: Useful, But Two Things to Know First

Legal Gray Zone

REA makes it trivially easy to ask an agent to dissect a competitor's feature or poke at DRM-protected software. Whether AI-automated reverse-engineering output still counts as "fair use" is genuinely unsettled, and DMCA Section 1201 explicitly restricts circumventing copyright-protection mechanisms in the US. If you're using it to reverse-engineer how a rival app works, the legal risk is real.

It's Not a Security Sandbox

The project's own docs are blunt: REA is not an isolated environment. Pointing it at an untrusted malware sample means letting your agent execute potentially dangerous code on your machine. For actual malware analysis, you still need a VM.

The sweet spot is legitimate security research, interoperability debugging, recovering functionality from systems with no source code, or just learning how binaries work — the exact use cases EFF has long argued deserve legal protection.

You never know if it's good until you try it yourself.
