🇺🇸 Persona Review: Teen Founder's $179 AI Wearable Band

This week's biggest AI story is not a new model — it is Persona, a new AI wearable startup from 19-year-old Zach Yadegari, co-founder of calorie-tracking app Cal AI, which just raised $10 million to build a $179 wristband that replaces your phone for everyday AI assistant tasks. It is also a fresh test of a category that already took a beating from Humane's AI Pin and the Rabbit R1.

What Persona Is: A Second Act for Cal AI's Founder

Yadegari built Cal AI into a viral hit before MyFitnessPal acquired it for an undisclosed sum in March 2026. He left in June to go all-in on Persona. The $10 million round was led by Vine Ventures, with Z Fellows founder Cory Levy and Collective Global also participating.

What the $179 AI Wearable Band Actually Does

Unlike always-listening devices, the Persona band activates with a button press or a flick of the wrist, then routes the request to a cloud AI model. It is pitched to handle:

  • Ordering food and booking rides
  • Taking notes and drafting emails
  • Answering everyday questions like a voice-first assistant

Persona says conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest, deletable by the user, and never sold to advertisers or data brokers — a direct answer to the complaint that follows every device like it. The band is slated to ship in December.

The AI Wearable Curse: Humane's AI Pin Is Still a Fresh Wound

This is not the first attempt to pull AI assistants off the phone screen. Humane's AI Pin launched at $699 plus a monthly fee, then got acquired by HP and discontinued within a year. The Rabbit R1 drew similar complaints about thin functionality and frequent crashes. Dropping the price to $179 with no subscription is the right instinct, but the real bottleneck for any AI wearable has never been hardware cost — it is whether the thing is faster, more accurate, and worth strapping on every single day. $10 million barely covers tooling for a consumer hardware product, let alone the software polish that category needs.

Kit's Take

I am not particularly bullish or bearish on AI wearables as a category — the software side is solid enough now. What killed earlier entries was battery life, response latency, and a weak case for daily wear. Persona has a founder with momentum and a good story; whether it survives the first wave of returns after its December ship date is the real test.

好不好用,試了才知道 — you won't know if it's good until you try it.
