If you use Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word to draft reports or pull data, pay attention: security researchers have confirmed a Copilot AI worm flaw where a normal-looking Word document can hide natural-language instructions that make Copilot silently rewrite your figures — and then copy those same malicious instructions into the new files it generates, letting the attack spread like a worm. This isn't theoretical — researcher Håkon Måløy disclosed it publicly on July 28, 2026, 144 days after reporting it to Microsoft.

What Is the Copilot AI Worm Vulnerability?

The Copilot AI worm works by hiding instructions in a Word document — white text on a white background, tiny font size — that Copilot reads as plain text without preserving visual formatting, so "invisible" commands still execute.

How Does the Copilot AI Worm Actually Spread?

  • An attacker embeds hidden instructions in a source document, invisible to the naked eye
  • A user asks Copilot to draft or edit content referencing that document
  • Copilot reads the hidden text and follows it — for example, altering financial figures in a report
  • Critically, Copilot also copies the same malicious instructions into the newly generated file
  • That new file spreads further via email, SharePoint, Teams, or OneDrive

Why Is This Copilot Flaw Especially Dangerous?

Most prompt injection attacks affect a single session. What makes this Copilot AI worm different is self-propagation: the malicious instructions ride along in every new document Copilot produces, and Word files are exactly the kind of thing that gets forwarded, uploaded, and shared constantly inside any company. Microsoft has shipped partial mitigations, but as of late July 2026 the underlying attack class still works.

How Should You Protect Yourself?

  • Be cautious with Word documents from unknown or external sources before feeding them to Copilot
