Claude

Gemini Agent

Claude

  • Drive

🇺🇸 Gemini Agent Review: Google's Work AI Also Runs Claude

At its Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8, Google Cloud launched Gemini Agent, a "universal agent for work" built around one prompt box that works inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Calendar — and even Microsoft 365 and Slack. The most surprising detail: Gemini Agent doesn't only run Google's own models. Companies can choose to have it execute tasks on Anthropic's Claude models instead, a rare move in an industry where vendors usually stay locked to their own stack.

What Gemini Agent Actually Does

Gemini Agent rolls up the scattered Gemini add-ons across Workspace — drafting emails, building spreadsheets, generating slides — into a single entry point, backed by a sub-agent coordination layer. For multi-step work, Gemini Agent spins up sub-agents that run in parallel or in sequence, and Google claims it can sustain tasks lasting days, not just single back-and-forth chat turns.

The Real Headline: Google's Own Agent Can Run on Claude

Per VentureBeat and 9to5Google, Gemini Agent currently supports both Gemini and Anthropic's Claude models, with Google saying more third-party models are coming. For businesses, this means you're not locked to one vendor — Gemini Agent picks a model based on the task, with built-in cost controls. It's a telling signal about where enterprise AI agent competition is heading: keeping customers on the platform now matters more than insisting on a single-model stack.

Agents With Their Own Gmail Account — Security Questions Remain

The more eyebrow-raising design choice: Gemini Agents configured as persistent "coworkers" get their own Workspace identity, including:

  • A dedicated Gmail address
  • Their own Calendar
  • Drive storage
  • A listing in the company directory

Google says every agent carries a cryptographically attested identity and operates inside existing enterprise security controls. But key details are still missing: whether every Gemini Agent gets an account or only "coworker"-tier ones do, whether admins can selectively disable parts of that access, and whether these accounts require extra Workspace licensing. Those are exactly the questions IT should ask before rolling this out.

Pricing and Availability

Gemini Agent is currently in private preview. Google says it will be included at no extra cost for customers already on Gemini Enterprise or qualifying Workspace Business/Enterprise plans, but there's no general-availability date or standalone pricing yet.

Bottom line: Gemini Agent's ambitions are real, and cross-vendor support for Claude is a genuinely unexpected move. But the governance and licensing details that matter for actual adoption aren't public yet — what you're seeing now is demo-stage material. If your company already runs on Workspace, it's worth watching, but don't hand it your critical workflows just yet. The only way to really know if it's useful is to try it yourself.
