Decisions API
對照老牌對手 TypeSafe 的 Jev(每百萬輸入 token 0.042 美元,輸出同樣免費),Decisions API 貴了超過兩倍。
🇺🇸 OpenAI Decisions API Review: 10x Faster Than Jev, 2x Pricier
On October 6, 2026, OpenAI moved the Decisions API out of its DevDay limited preview and into public beta. It is a dedicated classification-and-routing endpoint running on GPT-6 Luna, pitched as up to 10x faster than a normal chat-style call. If you are routing tasks in an AI agent pipeline, moderating content, or triaging tickets, here is the honest breakdown of whether it is worth switching to.
What the Decisions API Actually Does
This endpoint only answers three fixed-shape questions, it does not generate free-form text:
- Predicate: given text or an image, returns a 0-to-1 probability that a condition holds, for example whether a photo shows damage.
- Choice: picks one option from a list you supply, returning per-option probabilities plus a confidence score, for example which department should handle a ticket.
- Score: rates input against a severity scale you define, useful for risk tiers or triage.
It hits POST /v1/decisions and accepts both text and images, which is one input type ahead of the text-only competitor, Jev.
Speed and Price: Two Different Comparisons
Coverage of this launch tends to blur two separate claims, so let's split them:
- Speed: OpenAI's own number is about 150ms versus roughly 1.6 seconds for a standard Luna call through the Responses API, that's Decisions API compared to OpenAI's own general-purpose endpoint, not a rival product.
- Price: $0.10 per 1M input tokens, with cache reads/writes and output tokens unbilled. Its real rival, TypeSafe's Jev, charges $0.042 per 1M input tokens with free output too, meaning Decisions API costs over twice as much per token.
So the 10x faster headline is a comparison against OpenAI's own slower endpoint, while the actual competitive battle, against Jev, is one OpenAI is currently losing on price. OpenAI also hasn't published full schema details for its question types, where Jev is more transparent.
Who Should Actually Use It
- Teams already deep in the OpenAI stack who want one less vendor to integrate: the Decisions API saves plumbing time.
- Agent pipelines needing fast low-latency classification (intent detection, sub-agent routing): the 150ms figure is a real, noticeable win.
- High-volume, cost-sensitive classification workloads: run the math against Jev's per-token price first, it's meaningfully cheaper today.
- Regulated or compliance-heavy environments: beta already supports Zero Data Retention and HIPAA eligibility, but general availability is still coming weeks away, worth waiting for GA before committing production traffic.
The Decisions API isn't a breakthrough capability, classification-plus-routing is a need the market already serves (Jev has been doing this). It's OpenAI folding an existing demand into its own API catalog mainly to reduce vendor count for teams already on Luna. Worth tracking, not worth rushing to migrate.
You won't know until you try it.
