GPT-5.6 Sol/Max

🇺🇸 GPT-5.6 Luna Review: ChatGPT Free Tier Goes Unlimited

GPT-5.6 Luna became the default model for ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers in early August, with unlimited text conversations. It's the biggest free-tier move OpenAI has made all year, and it's driven by cost, not generosity. On July 30, OpenAI cut Luna's API pricing by 80% (input from $1 to $0.20 per million tokens, output from $6 to $1.20), and a week later made it the free-tier default. The logic is simple: cheap enough to give away without limits.

What GPT-5.6 Luna Actually Unlocks

Free and Go users now get unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, including the Think (reasoning) button that used to be rate-limited. But "unlimited" comes with caveats, it's not a blanket free-for-all:

  • File uploads, image generation, and tool calls (browsing, code execution) still have caps
  • Abuse guardrails remain in place; anomalous traffic gets throttled
  • Luna is a lightweight, low-latency model, not the flagship GPT-5.6 Sol/Max

Why Unlimited, Why Now

The real driver is inference efficiency. Luna was already positioned as the "cheap but high-volume" successor to GPT-4o mini, and an 80% price cut signals a real improvement in serving cost, enough that OpenAI could drop the free-tier rate limit entirely. The timing is hard to ignore: Gemini just crossed 1 billion monthly active users on August 11, and OpenAI loosening free-tier limits right after looks like a direct competitive response.

The Gap Between the Headline and Real Use

Honestly, this update does little for power users, engineers or anyone running complex reasoning tasks, because GPT-5.6 Luna's reasoning depth and context handling simply aren't in the same class as the paid Sol/Max tiers. It's built for high-volume, low-precision use: casual chat, quick Q&A, first-draft brainstorming. If you're already a Plus or Pro subscriber, you won't notice a difference. But if you're a casual free user who used to hit the "you've run out of messages today" wall, that friction is genuinely gone.

One thing worth flagging: "unlimited" applies to text only. Image and file-based tasks didn't get the same treatment, and OpenAI hasn't been loud about that distinction, it's easy to assume the whole account went unlimited when it didn't.

Bottom Line

This is a pragmatic, cost-driven decision, not a technical breakthrough. ChatGPT free tier users get meaningfully more room for text conversations, but don't mistake it for full-feature unlimited access. If your work involves complex reasoning or long-document analysis, a subscription is still the honest answer.

Only actual use tells you if it is worth it, 好不好用,試了才知道.
