The Question Nobody's Answering: Should AI Disclose It's AI?

Here's the part that doesn't get enough attention: these agentic calls don't necessarily identify themselves as AI to the person answering the phone. Security researchers have pointed out that the system is specifically engineered so the call sounds natural enough that staff often can't tell they're talking to a bot. Compare that to the EU AI Act, which now legally requires chatbots to disclose they're AI — Google's phone agent currently relies on voice realism to get businesses to cooperate, and transparency rules haven't caught up yet.

Kit's Honest Take: Useful, Not Magic

Real talk — Google AI Mode agentic booking genuinely solves a specific annoyance: not wanting to call around for quotes, especially in industries like home repair that still run on phone calls. But it's limited to three categories, still paused in five states, and it's only as good as Google's local business data. If a listing is outdated, the AI will happily call the wrong number or ask about stale pricing. It removes the hassle of dialing — it doesn't replace the judgment of actually finding the right service provider. Don't confuse the two.
