It's Meta's answer to ChatGPT Agent, Claude Cowork, and Google's Gemini Spark, and the timing, weeks ahead of the holiday shopping season, looks deliberate.

How Meta Muse Actually Works

Under the hood, Meta Muse runs inside a dedicated cloud virtual machine Meta calls the "Muse Secure VM," with a built-in browser for navigating sites and filling forms. A separate watchdog process, Sentinel, is supposed to approve every outbound network request. Passwords are stored so Muse "can use them without seeing them," and sensitive actions like sending an email or placing an order require your explicit confirmation, with a full activity log you can review afterward. A more locked-down "Muse Confidential VM" with end-to-end encryption is coming later.

The Real Risk Isn't the Tech — It's Meta's Track Record

The engineering sounds reasonable on paper. The problem is trust. Meta has a 2011 FTC settlement for deceiving users about privacy, a $5 billion FTC fine in 2019, fresh FTC privacy-order violations in 2023, and the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which exposed user passwords along the way. Asking people to now hand Meta Muse their passwords, calendars, and payment details runs straight into that history. "It won't end up feeding ads this time" is a claim that needs a track record, not a launch blog post.

Who Meta Muse Is Actually Competing With

Muse lines up against Gemini Spark, Claude Cowork, and a growing list of browser-native agents — functionally, there's a lot of overlap. Meta's edge is distribution: bolting Muse straight into WhatsApp's existing user base. That's also its biggest concentration-of-data risk.
