Think of it as banking's decades-old KYC (Know Your Customer) concept, retrofitted for AI agents.

Why Agentic Commerce Needs a Trust Standard Now

AI agents have moved past making recommendations — they now complete purchases directly. Industry estimates put AI agents on track to orchestrate $3 trillion to $5 trillion in global consumer commerce by 2030. The problem: merchants and banks currently have no reliable way to tell whether an order came from a real person or an AI agent acting without proper authorization. Fraud exposure, permission scope, and refund liability are all unresolved gray areas — exactly what KYA is meant to fix.

Three Competing Protocols, Now Learning to Talk to Each Other

KYA isn't a fourth standard meant to replace them — it's an interoperability layer so these three systems can recognize each other's verified agent identities, sparing merchants and platforms from integrating three incompatible systems at once.

Honest Review: How Far Is This from Actually Working?

The good news is that three major payment networks rarely align this fast — a genuinely positive signal for anyone building automated AI agent shopping or subscription-management tools. But at this stage, KYA is still just a statement of intent, with real gaps:

No timeline: neither a published standard nor a testing rollout date has been announced
No pilot data: no participating merchants, issuing banks, or transaction volumes have been disclosed
Liability undefined: the framework doesn't say who's on the hook — consumer, platform, or agent developer — when an AI agent misfires or gets defrauded

For everyday users and developers, there's no need to rush and rebuild your checkout or subscription flows yet. KYA reads more like foundational groundwork than a launch — real-world adoption likely won't arrive before 2027. Worth watching, not worth betting on yet.
