The complaint alleges a "brazen campaign" of downloading pirated material via BitTorrent and scraping sources like Library Genesis and the Pirate Library Mirror, plus directly scraping licensed lyric sites such as Musixmatch and LyricFind, to obtain lyrics and sheet music for tens of thousands of songs used to train Claude. Named works include "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "All I Want for Christmas Is You," and "I Am the Walrus."

Damages: Up to $150,000 Per Song, Billions in Exposure

This Anthropic copyright lawsuit seeks statutory damages of up to $150,000 per willfully infringed work, plus up to $25,000 for each instance of removed copyright management information. With "tens of thousands" of allegedly infringed compositions named, total exposure could run into the billions — Music Business Worldwide called it "one of the largest and most blatant ongoing thefts of intellectual property in history."

Not the First Time: The $1.5B Bartz Settlement Set the Tone

This isn't Anthropic's first training-data lawsuit. Earlier this year, Anthropic settled Bartz v. Anthropic for $1.5 billion with authors over pirated books used in training — a number many in the industry read as a signal that rights holders who sue can actually collect. Months later, Sony and Warner followed, and BMG is reportedly preparing a similar suit over songs by artists like Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars. Anthropic's position hasn't changed: a spokesperson called training on copyrighted material "transformative fair use" and said the company will defend itself.

What This Actually Means If You Use Claude

Honestly: nothing changes for your Claude subscription or API calls tomorrow. Two things are worth watching instead. First, Claude already restricts verbatim lyric reproduction — try asking it for full lyrics now and see what happens, since this case may tighten that further. Second, when copyright suits like this settle, the cost typically gets absorbed into training-data licensing, and that tends to show up eventually in service pricing. AI copyright litigation is now routine, not an outlier — OpenAI is still fighting the New York Times, and now Anthropic has a music-rights case on top of its book-publishing settlement. This is an industry-wide cost structure playing out in court, not a one-off scandal.
