🇺🇸 Muse Code Review: Meta CLI's Default Data Trap
Muse Code is Meta's new terminal-based AI coding agent, launched in early August and powered by its in-house Muse Spark 1.2 model. It works like Claude Code or Codex CLI — run it from your terminal, hand it a task, and it plans, edits, tests, and debugs across your codebase, built for multi-file refactors and long debugging sessions.
Cheap Pricing, but the Cost Is Your Code
Muse Code ships with two pricing tiers. The Standard tier runs .25 per million input tokens and .25 per million output tokens. The Contributor tier drops that to /bin/zsh.10 input and /bin/zsh.20 output — 12.5x to 21x cheaper. The catch: choosing Contributor means Meta trains its models on your prompts and code.
The Part That Should Worry You: It Defaults to Contributor
Early user reports say Muse Code defaults to the Contributor tier right after install — meaning unless you manually switch it off, every prompt and every line of code you write could end up as training data. For engineers touching proprietary or client codebases, that's an opt-out, not an opt-in, and it's a risky default to ship.
How It Stacks Up Against Claude Code and Codex CLI
Feature-wise, Muse Code follows the same playbook: a one-line curl install, a free CLI, pay only for tokens burned. The cheap Contributor pricing genuinely makes sense for open-source work, throwaway prototypes, and scratch repos. For anything commercial, paying Standard-tier rates to keep your code out of training data is the safer call.
Kit's Take
Meta undercutting the market on price is a smart wedge into the AI coding agent race, but shipping data-sharing as the default is a trust problem. If you're trying Muse Code, the first thing to do is check which tier you're actually on — don't find out after your code already leaked. Open-source hobbyists can lean into the cheap Contributor tier; anyone on paid client work shouldn't cut that corner.
You won't know until you try it.
