🇹🇼 Meta

Meta

🇺🇸 Meta Smart Glasses Review: Recording Light Loophole Fixed

Meta smart glasses just got caught with a privacy loophole that made a mockery of their own safety feature: users could start recording, then cover the white capture LED with a finger or a sticker, and the camera would keep filming while onlookers saw no sign of it. Meta pushed a firmware update in late August to close the gap — the second privacy patch in under two months.

How the Meta Smart Glasses Recording Loophole Worked

Ray-Ban Meta, Meta Oakley, and the new $300 Meta Glasses all rely on the same trust mechanism: a small white LED lights up next to the lens whenever the camera is recording, so people nearby know they are on camera. The flaw was that the light only signaled recording — it was not tied to the recording itself. Start filming first, then cover the LED with a finger, tape, or one of the third-party "LED blockers" sold online, and the camera kept rolling with zero visible indication.

That workaround had circulated widely in tutorials, and a small cottage industry of accessories built specifically to hide the light sprang up — undermining the one privacy signal Meta smart glasses were designed to give.

What the v26 Update Actually Fixes

The new firmware flips the logic: if the LED gets covered while a recording is in progress, the camera now stops recording outright instead of just letting the indicator go dark. It is Meta's second fix in two months — a July update already handled the more extreme case of people physically damaging or drilling out the LED hardware so it could never light up; that update disables the camera entirely if tampering is detected.

  • Rollout: mandatory update across Ray-Ban Meta, Meta Oakley, and Meta Glasses
  • Fix: covering the light during recording now stops the recording, not just the indicator
  • Timing: less than two months after the previous LED-tampering patch

Should You Worry About Being Filmed?

The loophole matters more because of a lawsuit filed in March 2026 against Meta and lens partner Luxottica, alleging the companies marketed the glasses as privacy-conscious while footage — including intimate recordings shot inside people's homes — was reportedly sent to outsourced annotators in Kenya to help train AI models. Combined with the recording-light bug, it turned "can these glasses secretly film me" from a spec-sheet footnote into a real consumer concern.

For now, the white LED is still the only visible cue that Meta smart glasses are recording, and this update at least makes "cover the light" no longer a working bypass. That is a real improvement, not just PR — but it is also a reminder that privacy protections on wearable cameras are an ongoing arms race, not a one-time fix.
